Thrifting Diaries: Oswald Rolling Eyes Dog Clock

Time for another edition of Thrifting Diaries. This time, I wanted to share one of my favorite finds ever – Oswald Rolling Eyes Dog Clock!

Tick-Tock

While perusing the glassware aisle of a local thrift store (surprise, surprise!), I heard the distinct ticking sound of a clock the next section over. The sound was strong and, for some reason, I had a feeling it could be a wind-up clock. I followed the tick-tocks, but as I got closer to the source, I couldn’t see anything resembling a time piece.

As I was straining to follow the ticks, this cutie caught my eye. With its big eyes and short snout, it looked so much like my pup. And then I realized it was the source of the chime.

But where’s the clock face?

The back had the obvious wind-up clock mechanism, but beside the cute doggy face, there was no trace of an hour or minute hands. I figured it had to be the eyes and after moving the pegs in the back I saw the eyes moving! The left tells the hours, and right the minutes!

So cute! And just look at it!

History of Oswald Rolling Eyes Dog Clock

Of course, I had to dig in and learn more about this precious artifact. I found out that it was made in Germany, in the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) region between 1926 and roughly 1950s.

This “Pekingese” design is one of many canine ones, but there are also sculls, monkeys, people and many others. And how amazing is it that it’s still in working condition!

This Rolling Eyes Dog Clock is Available for adoption

I loved every minute of playing with this clock, and I still smile every time my eyes catch its silly face. However, I would like it to find a new permanent home and this baby is available in the Etsy shop.
