Adding Pullout Drawers for Kitchen Organization
Even after I shared my Kitchen Organization Hacks, I kept shuffling things around. For some time, I’d been itching to put some order in my overflowing water bottle cabinet. I knew a pullout drawer of some sort would be a perfect solution in this step of kitchen organization!
This deep and narrow cabinet was a mess. I could never see what I had and I could forget about my short ams reaching the big containers in the very back. But, I’ll be honest, it took me a while to purchase these pullout drawers. They do not come cheap. And I just could not justify spending money on a cabinet I barely opened. Or did I not open it often, because I could not stand the disarray?
To distract from it, I decided to add a couple more dish stands in my glasses and cups cupboard. This didn’t help. If anything, it looked so good that it made my determination to get me this awesome contraption only grew stronger until I gave in.
What I had in mind for Kitchen Organization
First off, I knew I wanted a two-tier shelf with two drawers. My cabinet was tall enough for it and I was determined to use up every cubed inch I could.
Second, I really didn’t want to mess with fortifying the metal structure on the side walls. So, I specifically searched for the kind that screws in the bottom and back of the cabinet.
And this is the type I ended up with.
Measuring for a perfectly fitted Pullout Drawer system
Wire cabinet organizers are produced in various standard sizes and finding the one that works was super easy.
However, like many kitchens cabinets, mine have face frames, and I needed to account for that.
What I did was just make sure the baskets could fit through the frame as I knew I could finagle the structure in. Also, I made sure that the bottom basket sat high enough on the structure to clear that frame lip. But you can work around it by adding washers under the metal structure to lift the whole drawer frame.
Baskets came pre-built and I just needed to put together the supporting structure. Once completed, I fit the frame into the cabinet. Then I installed the bottom basket and pushed it in as far as it would go. This helped determine where to secure the bottom and back brackets.
Top basket had three different height options. To find the perfect height I grabbed the tallest of my water bottles and positioned the top drawer at the height that would clear that tall bottle. This left just enough room for smaller go-cups.
My Pullout drawer was installed and …
… ready to thrill me with its efficiency. What can I say, small things like this really make me happy.
