SodaStream – the Newest Obsession
Some quirky palate pleasers evoke childhood memories instantaneously – like Nutella or Kefir (plain, none of that fruity stuff) or the original (and banned in the US) Kinder Egg. And then there are fizzy drinks. There is nothing I love more in the summer than a tall glass of ice-cold water with big bubbles. This made me a perfect demographic for a SodaStream machine.
I was aware of the brand, but I was in denial about how significant my dependence on these airballs was. So, I decided to get one for the home for Christmas. All I can say is – I don’t know what took me so long!
SodaStream setup
The package comes with the machine, a gas container and a 1-litter bottle. Even so, I didn’t get around to setting up my SodaStream for a few days. I literally just needed to install the CO2 tube.
Thinking back, I almost wish I had filmed myself doing it. I was worried that the gas tank would be volatile and I somehow imagined that if I missed a step the pressurized can would go flying around the house taking my kitchen cabinets with it… or my head, for that matter.
None of that happened!
The canister fit in quietly and without any explosive surprises. The best part – the gas is the only thing running this whole operation. There are no plugs or batteries and there is only one button. ONE! You press the button 3-4 times and you get a bottle of refreshing goodness.
More than plain (soda)water
Although I love straight bubbles, it’s nice to spice things up from time to time. And possibilities are endless.
Here are some ways I like to spruce up my H2O:
Fresh Fruit – Fruit-infused water is not new concept, but fizz makes it even better. I love smooshing raspberries and adding a splash of lemon before topping them off with water. But any juicy berries or citrus fruits work great. To sweeten the drink, I sometimes mix in a bit of honey.
Mixers – Since the snow from the last snow storm barely melted, there are not many fresh fruits readily available.Instead, I got some Bubly mixers – tiny bottles that pack a lot of flavor. My favorite in this lineup is raspberry. So good!
Juice – Literally any juice would work here! Sparkling lemonade, bubbly blueberry. Not sure about prune juice, but can’t see why not. I start with equal parts juice and sparkling water and adjust from there to perfectly hit the spot.
Mocktails – Muddled (or finely chop) mint, mix in some lime and you have a mojito-inspired treat.
Cocktails – Add some rum and you’re ready for a party!
Mixology experiments coming up! In the meantime, …
